Parents in Islam (Part 5): The Son and What He Earns Belong To The Father

This is the fifth in a series of translations of selections from the work Matali al-Budur fi jawami akhbar al-Burur by Sheikh Ahmed al-Sideeq al-Ghumari al-Hasani. This excellent book is a compilation of Hadith divided into over 80 chapters on the topic of being good to parents (Birr al-Walidayn). ‘Birr al-Walidayn’ can mean to show parents kindness, righteousness, obedience, to give them excellent companionship, and to maintain ties with them amongst many other meanings. In-sha-Allah I will be translating excerpts and adding some of the Sheikh’s commentary as footnotes. Wa billahi al-tawfiq.

Part 5 – The Son and What He Earns Belong To The Father

Jabir reported that:

A man said ‘O Messenger of Allah , I have wealth and a son yet my father wants to take my wealth.’ He said “You and your wealth belong to your father.”

Ibn Majah

Abdullah ibn Umar reported that:

A man came to (the Prophet ) appealing for support against his father saying ‘He takes my wealth’. The Messenger of Allah said to him “You and your wealth are from the earnings of your father”.

Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir

In al-Awsat (of Imam al-Tabarani) there is the following narration:

“The son is from the earnings of the father.”
