Remain Calm And Wait for The Intercession Of The Prophet ﷺ – Advice From Ibn Arabi

We have been informed by the Prophet ﷺ that he will be the first to intercede and the first to have his intercession accepted on the Day of Judgement.

In other famous narrations, he ﷺ told us that on that day, in a state of desperation and fear, people will flock from Prophet to Prophet, asking them to intercede with Allah Most High on their behalf. Each Prophet however, Adam (as), Musa (as), Isa (as), and others, will say that they are unable to do so. Finally they will go to the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad ﷺ and only he will be permitted to intercede with Allah.

So why do the people on the Day of Judgement run from Prophet to Prophet, tiring themselves in the process? Why not immediately go to the Messenger of Allah? Sheikh al-Akbar Ibn al-Arabi clarifies this, making it clear that not everyone will be in this state. Rather some people will be relaxed, watching the events unfold.

The Sheikh Muhyi al-Din ibn Arabi (may Allah be please with him) said:1

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only informed us that he would be the first to intercede and the first to have his intercession accepted (on the day of judgement) out of sympathy for us (his Ummah), in order that we be relieved from fatiguing ourselves by running from Prophet to Prophet on that Great Day. Every one of them will say “Myself myself! (nafsi nafsi). I am only concerned with myself on this day!”

So he ﷺ wanted to make us aware of his station on the Day of Standing so that we remain relaxed in our places (patiently waiting) until his ﷺ turn comes and he ﷺ says “I am for it, I am for it (the intercession).”

So every person who did not hear this Hadith, or they heard it but forgot it due to the terrors on the place of standing, then it is inevitable that they will become fatigued and run from Prophet to Prophet. This is in contrast to the one who hears the Hadith and it remains with him till the Day of Judgement and he does not forget it. Surely, he will not become fatigued.

May Allah Most High make us of those who remember this Hadith and never forget it.
